Why is the pelvic floor important?

There are hundreds of muscles in the human body. Among them there is a group of hidden, but very important muscles to live our lives in a full and calm way. We are talking about the pelvic floor.

The pelvic floor is located in the lower abdomen, below the bladder and sexual organs. Its function is to support the internal organs, control sphincters and regulate friction during sexual intercourse (in the case of people with a vaginal canal), among others.

In a sexual relationship, for example, the state of our pelvic floor can change everything. This area contracts before and during orgasm. If it is weak, it can cause lack of sensitivity, anorgasmia (inability to reach orgasm), difficulty in achieving penetration or even pain.

However, there are many other disorders associated with a weak pelvic floor, such as:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Dysfunctions associated with spinal cord injury

This type of disorders are transversal to any age. That is why today there is a wide variety of patients, from early childhood to the elderly, looking for solutions to correct any type of dysfunction.

What are the solutions? Basically, the main solution is to exercise the pelvic floor. There are different exercises and routines suitable for each patient. Many people, for example, are recommended to perform Kegel exercises or pelvic ball contractions. However, there is also another much more comprehensive solution: electrostimulation.
